Location: The Solar Energy Workshop will be on location in Powderhorn, Colorado at the Cebolla Hot Springs Ranch. The nearest "city" is Gunnison, located 20 minutes (drive time) from the Ranch. The Gunnison Airport is an easy 40 minute flight from Denver International Airport. United Airlines and Air Wisconsin serve the airport. Alternatively, the drive from Denver is approximately 4 hours and from Grand Junction it is approximately 2 hours.

Lodging: Gunnison has numerous hotels, motels and lodges. We have set up a discounted rate for workshop attendees at the Best Western Tomichi Inn. They offer a full buffet breakfast, indoor pool, jacuzzi and internet access.  The rates are $94 for a queen and $99 for two queens. Normally, prices would be $120 - 150 a night during this time of year.

  • Best Western Tomichi Village Inn at 970-641-1131
  • Comfort Inn at 970-642-1000
  • Days Inn at 970-641-0608
  • Holiday Inn at 970-641-1288

Additionally, Lake City, Colorado is located approximately 22 miles south of Powderhorn and is a wonderful place to visit and spend the night.

> Go here for Driving Directions and a Colorado State Map.

Shuttle: We will be offering a shuttle service to and from the Best Western each morning and each evening. The schedule will be posted on this web site as soon as our attendee list details are sorted out.

On Site Camping: Alternatively, we are offering on-site camping. Portable toilets and fresh water will be accessible to Workshop attendees.  The camping area consists of creekside sites (limited number available) and comfortable meadow areas. Be sure to bring a tent, sleeping bag/pads/mattresses, lighting, cook gear, food and stove. You will also want a warm jacket for the evenings and perhaps a warm hat and gloves.

Food: Starting Monday the 14th and continuing each day of the Workshop, we will be catering Lunch for all attendees and instructors and worker bees. On Saturday evening the 19th, we will throw an end of the week Bar-b-Que to celebrate our accomplishment.

* Attendees are responsible for Breakfast and Dinners the rest of the time.

What to Bring: Although we are gathering in mid-July, the temperatures in the Colorado mountains can dip to 35 degrees F at night.  Daytime temperatures can reach 80 degrees F so be sure to come prepared for the potential 50 degree swings. The elevation of the Cebolla Ranch is 8000 feet so the air is thin and the sun shines bright. Plenty of water will be available.

Among the obvious essentials required for a week in the high country, we recommend:

  • Workgloves
  • Long sleeve cotton shirt(s)
  • Jeans
  • Jacket - windproof, water repellent at least
  • Shoes - hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes
  • Sunscreen - better than 32 SPF
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Water bottle - Nalgenes or bike bottles work well
  • Camera - it is beautiful up here

Recreation: The recreational possibilities are endless in our area. Bring your fishing gear, mountain bikes, hiking shoes, binoculars (great wildlife viewing everywhere - elk, deer, birds of prey, trout, coyote, pronghorn, bighorn) and maybe a frisbee or hacky sack! Cebolla Creek runs right through the middle of the ranch property and is home to blue-ribbon trout fishing! You can purchase single-day or multi-day Colorado fishing licenses in Gunnison.

Also, Crested Butte is 50 minutes to the north, Lake City is 25 minutes to the south and Gunnison is 20 minutes away. During the week of the workshop, Gunnison will be hosting the famous Cattleman's Days Rodeo and Fair. This event is chock full of great activities and is a lot of fun for families!
